Things to do in Praia do Rosa: a local seasonal guide
Ask what there is to do in Praia do Rosa and you'll usually get the same hurried answer: beach and surf. True, and it's the shortest possible answer. This guide was written a ten-minute drive away, and organizes Rosa the way it actually works: by season, by end of the beach, by rhythm.
In short: in Praia do Rosa you surf (Rosa Norte for the experienced, Rosa Sul to learn), walk Atlantic Forest trails, watch southern right whales between July and November, swim in the natural rock pools on the headland, and end the day in the centrinho, Rosa's three-block village center. Each season changes what the beach offers.
Things to do in Praia do Rosa: the short list
If you only have a few days, this is the order we suggest to guests staying with us:
- Surf at Rosa Sul. Sand bottom, gentle waves.
- Walk the Mirante do Luz trail (2.5 km, one way). Atlantic Forest down to Praia do Luz, the ocean appearing between the trees.
- Watch whales from the hills (July to November, peaking September and October). No boat, no cost, from the headlands above the bay.
- Climb down to the Rosa Norte rock pool (short headland trail, low tide and calm sea only).
- Have dinner in the centrinho (three blocks, Italian through sushi). Book ahead December to February.
- Take a slow breakfast at Leggero Bakery or MAWA Café, both in the centrinho.
- Ride horses at Rosa Norte with Cavalgadas Rosa Norte, on the sand and through the trails.
- Paddle the Ibiraquera Lagoon (seven minutes by car). SUP or kayak at first light, kitesurf when the northeast wind builds.
- Hike to Praia Vermelha along the Rosa Norte headland, about 45 minutes.
- Do nothing for an entire afternoon. It's the thing guests ask us for again.

Surfing Praia do Rosa: two breaks, two temperaments
The bay is under two kilometers long, but it splits into two worlds.
Rosa Norte has long, powerful waves that work best on a south-southeast swell. It's the stretch that shows up on lists of Santa Catarina's best waves. On big days it belongs to surfers with real mileage: the peak is contested and the current pulls. The most consistent months are the winter ones, when the cold fronts arrive from the south.
Rosa Sul has a sand bottom, gentler waves, and hosts the region's surf schools. Lessons with a local instructor, all equipment included. If the plan is to catch the first wave of your life, September to December is the kindest window: a smaller, more predictable sea with fewer people in the water.
Trails and natural pools
From the southern end of Rosa, the Mirante do Luz trail runs about 2.5 km through Atlantic Forest to Praia do Luz. It's 2.5 km in which the ocean appears and disappears between the trees until the trail opens onto sand. There's no continuous shade, no drinking water, no signage and no fee, and it only goes one way: either you walk back, or take an Uber from the other side. It's 25 minutes each way.
From Rosa Norte, a short headland trail leads to the natural rock pool: stone formations that hold clear salt water. It only works at low tide with a calm sea. With swell, the pool disappears under the break and the headland turns dangerous. Check the tide table before you go.
From the Rosa Norte headland, the path continues to Praia Vermelha, and from there to Praia do Ouvidor, already in the municipality of Garopaba: 3.5 km of trail in total, through dunes, restinga scrub and a river that empties onto the sand. Ouvidor also has road access and shoreline parking, and in summer it fills with day-trip families.

Whales, birds and the nature of the bay
Between July and November, southern right whales arrive on this stretch of coast to calve and nurse. The peak is September and October. Imbituba has held the title of Brazil's National Right Whale Capital since 2000, and this whole coastline sits inside the APA da Baleia Franca protected area: under IBAMA rules, boats must stay 200 meters from the animals.
What makes Rosa unusual is that no boat is needed at all. From the hills above the bay you can see a mother and calf a few hundred meters off the sand, for free, on any clear-water day of the season.

The centrinho: tables, bars, the night
Three blocks hold Rosa's social life: restaurants, bars, lifestyle shops, tattoo studios. A few addresses that repeat in our own routine:
- Ragù cucina italiana: the centrinho's Italian. Fresh pasta made in-house, a loud room in summer, a sidewalk table when the night allows.
- Goen Sushi Lounge: the centrinho's sushi bar. The fish is whatever came in that week, not whatever's on a fixed menu. Good for a drink that turns into dinner.
- Refúgio do Pescador: Not quite in the centrinho, but close enough. Chef Jéssica's contemporary menu, built on the fish that arrives that day and the garden she keeps in the neighborhood. Book.
- MAWA Café: Breakfast and brunch, European cosmopolitan style.
- Mini Cocktail Bar: Signature cocktails and classics reinvented with local fruit. Always a good vibe.
- Baixo Rosa: Live music in the middle of the forest, right in the centrinho.
The night runs on two rhythms: music and movement in the centrinho, quieter bars toward Rosa Sul and the beach path. About half the places stay open year-round; the rest open only for the season. Getting there and parking
Praia do Rosa is in the municipality of Imbituba, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina: 99 km from Florianópolis International Airport, about a 1h30 drive, via the BR-101.
Inside the village, access is by narrow and partly unpaved streets, and summer parking is Rosa's real problem: the spots near the sand are taken early. Paid parking exists, but it can get expensive. Outside the season, none of this is an issue.
Beyond Praia do Rosa: the surroundings
Rosa opens the region. The rest starts seven minutes away. The Ibiraquera Lagoon trades waves for 1.7 meters of depth at its deepest point: you can stand almost anywhere in it, which makes it the region's best water for children, SUP and kayaking. Kitesurfing happens when the northeast wind builds, between 7 and 20 knots.
Praia do Luz, at the end of the Mirante trail, is the region's silent counterpoint: seasonal infrastructure, beach shacks only in summer, working fishermen in winter.

Where to sleep near Praia do Rosa
We live on the other side of that geography. Ibirahill sits on Morro Elegante, in Ibiraquera, surrounded by the lagoon and the sea: three houses of a boutique stay, not a hotel. Casa Galeria and the other two are a ten-minute drive from Rosa, close enough for dinner in the centrinho, far enough to fall asleep hearing only the forest.
