THE PLACE

We travelled a long time before choosing where to stop. Between the Atlantic Forest and the open sea, it was here — in Ibiraquera — that the landscape began to set the pace of our days.

Where is Ibiraquera?

Ibiraquera is in Imbituba, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil south of Florianópolis. The region brings together three beaches: Praia do Rosa, Praia do Luz, and Barra de Ibiraquera, with the Ibiraquera Lagoon set between the ocean and the Atlantic Forest. Ibirahill sits on Morro do Elegante, ten minutes by car from Praia do Rosa and three minutes by car from Praia do Luz.

The Place: A Meeting of Three Worlds

We didn't end up in Ibiraquera by chance. After a lot of coast around the world, we chose this hill for three things that meet here: the lagoon, the open sea, and the forest.

Ibiraquera: Cradle of Nature and Winds

Barra de Ibiraquera is where the lagoon meets the sea. Artisanal fishing is part of its everyday life. Along the coast, from north to south, are Praia do Rosa, Praia do Luz and Barra de Ibiraquera.

  • The Experience

    The lagoon brings windsurfers, kitesurfers and unhurried paddlers together. The wind decides the session; on quieter days, SUP is another way to spend a morning. Choose the entry point with local guidance, especially when the Barra is open.

  • Highlight

    Opening the Barra changes water exchange between the lagoon and sea. It is also part of local management and changes the conditions around the channel.

Praia do Luz: The Best-Kept Secret

Immediately adjacent to Ibirahill, Praia do Luz maintains a mystical and wild atmosphere. Historically less explored than its neighbors, it offers a wide stretch of sand and trails that wind through the hillside.

  • The Experience

    A stretch of sand, trails climbing the hill, and Ilha da Batuta in the sea ahead. Praia do Luz has road access as well as coastal paths. If you plan to paddle, ask about the launch and sea conditions; low tide alone does not make an ocean crossing suitable.

  • Highlight

    In winter and spring, southern right whales use this coast to calve and nurse. July to November is the usual window for planning a visit. In season, they are frequently seen from Ibirahill’s terraces; each sighting still depends on the day.

Praia do Rosa: Vibration, Gastronomy & Surf

A member of the Les Plus Belles Baies du Monde association, Praia do Rosa merges the rustic with the cosmopolitan. Once a fishing village and cattle-ranching settlement, today it draws surf, good food and people from all over, without losing the sand under its feet.

  • The Experience

    Divided between Rosa Sul (more vibrant with great beach clubs) and Rosa Norte (wilder and preferred by surfers), the beach offers consistent waves and a village with restaurants and bistros.

    The contrast between the soundtrack of the waves and the aroma of fine dining emanating from hillside restaurants.
