It is officially recognised as the National Capital of the Southern Right Whale, one of the main reproductive sanctuaries for the species in the South Atlantic.

Where Imbituba Sits

The Imbituba coast runs roughly 40 km and includes 12 main beaches divided into three distinct zones:

ZoneCharacter
North (Rosa / Ibiraquera / Luz Triangle)Tourism-focused, preserved, surf and slow-living communities
Centre (Praia da Vila / Porto)Urban, industrial-maritime, big-wave surf
South (Ribanceira / Itapirubá)Rural, agricultural, long deserted beaches

What It's Best Known For

National Capital of the Southern Right Whale

Between July and November, southern right whales migrate from Antarctica to give birth and nurse their calves along the Imbituba coast. The Instituto Baleia Franca, headquartered in the municipality, is the entity responsible for protecting the species. Land-based observation is possible from multiple points along the coast.

Praia do Rosa

Praia do Rosa is the Imbituba beach that appears most often on international travel lists. A small village with world-class surf, restaurants, bars and an eclectic atmosphere. Visited by surfers and international travelers year-round.

The Tainha Run

Between May and July, the Azorean tradition of the tainha (mullet) run still sets the rhythm of the sea on several beaches of the municipality — especially Praia do Luz and Praia da Vila. Lookouts on the cliffs, nets cast on signal.

The Port of Imbituba

One of the more important ports in southern Brazil, specialising in dry-bulk cargo. Sits in the centre of the municipality, adjacent to Praia da Vila.
